For the occasion of International Safe Abortion Day, join us for a screening of ‘The Janes’ followed by brief talks and a group discussion!
The 2022 documentary tells the true story of members of the Jane Collective, a group of women who performed abortions in the US from 1968 until abortion was legalised in 1973 through Roe v. Wade. The documentary features interviews with several members of the collective. (Roe v. Wade was in effect until 2022, when it was overturned).
After the screening, we will turn our attention to the local context.
We will first have 2 brief talks by Prof Isabel Stabile and Dr Natalie Psaila from Doctors for Choice, who will talk about the local Family Planning Advisory Service (FPAS Malta), which provides information on reproductive health, and the Abortion Doula Support Service, which provides information and support specifically on abortion. Next, Liza Caruana-Finkel, a helpline volunteer with Abortion Support Network, will talk about the organisation’s work in helping people across Europe (including Malta) access abortions through information and financial assistance.
Afterwards, we will open up to a group discussion on abortion in relation to Malta. Bring your thoughts and questions!
